Installing Debian GNU/Linux testing _Squeeze_ - Official Snapshot i386 NETINST Binary-1 20100309-09:50 on laptop Dell Latitude E6500 Last updated: June 8 2010 Date installation: Mar 09 2010, afternoon Overall result: OK. Mostly worked off the box. The net-installer handled correctly most hardware. Basic installation: followed the standard simple installation, but for partitioning used manual partitioning to preserve the pre-installed Windoze 7 Partitions: The Debian partitioner did it all right. Problems: 1) In the Debian installer, some characters meant for menu boundaries were "corrupt", and printed funny-looking ascii characters. Everything was usable, but certainly not as intended by those who programmed the installer. This is a alpha version of the testing installer, though... 2) The installer detected correctly the Windoze 7, and made me assume that it would include it in the grub initial menu. It didn't. Post installation I had to run update-grub manually as root, then the menu did include windoze as expected. Windoze 7 had to restart once in some "protected mode", but after that it was happy enough. Non-experts should be aware that Windoze is probably fine even if it does not show up in the menu, and can be easily restored! 3) Audio capture does not work immediately (playback does), but needs some fiddling with the gnome-volume-control utility to configure correctly. 4) To activate the wi-fi Network controller I did as instructed at http://wiki.debian.org/iwlagn and everything went fine. I installed wicd. 5) The internal camera does not work, I'm still looking after that. 6) Sleep and hybernate do not work correctly with the off-the-box free nv video driver: the pc goes to sleep, but would not wake up correctly (screen remains blank). Solution: install the nvidia proprietory driver, following http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers There is a bug and a solution described in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=574614 With this fixup both sleep and hybernate work brilliantly. Especially sleep is very fast in waking up, and everything is as was before, except that if a dvd is in the drive, it starts playing.
