History of the groupAfter many years of theoretical research mainly in Quantum Optics and on the Free Electron Laser, in the mid-nineties F.Casagrande was especially involved in studies on cavity Quantum Electrodynamics, where he was developing a description of the micromaser operating in a mesoscopic regime (the so-called mesomaser). In 1993 he met A. Lulli, a brilliant student in Physics working on speckle interferometry for his thesis at Joint Research Center in Ispra ; their first interaction on this problem produced their first joint paper. While choosing to teach in high schools, A.L. was quickly attracted by the beauties of Quantum Mechanics. Meanwhile, in January '97 F.C. attended a School near Innsbruck where, besides learning...to ski, he heard about recently developed methods for the numerical simulations of open systems dynamics. Soon after, an intense collaboration started (sometimes extending to problems in Applied Optics - as well as to more mundane discussions, e.g. about football, or nice excursions to the mountains or the seaside, often with colleagues and students).
